2024: The Year AI Transforms Business

In 2024, the excitement around early generative AI turns into real business results. This technology, which can handle text, voice, and video, is changing how companies work smarter, innovate, and get creative. McKinsey & Company says these AI uses could add up to USD 2.6 trillion to 4.4 trillion a year to the world economy.

We've learned a lot from working with partners in over 25 countries. Here's what we think will happen in 2024:

  1. Customization of Enterprise AI: Businesses are making AI that fits their specific needs. This includes using their own data to get better answers from AI. For example, a retail chain might use AI that understands local customer tastes and cultural differences.

  2. Open Source AI Models: In 2024, open source AI models become more popular. This helps businesses grow faster by mixing these models with their data. IBM's work with NASA on a geospatial AI model is a great example. This model helps with climate research and is available for everyone to use.

  3. API-Driven AI and Microservices: Using APIs (application programming interfaces) makes it easier to build AI applications. For instance, IBM created AI services for a retailer that improved customer service, marketing, and inventory management. These services were flexible and could adapt to market changes.

  4. AI as a National Priority: Countries around the world are focusing on AI, like in a new space race. This is leading to more research and growth. In 2023, the EU moved forward with its AI Act, setting rules for AI use, including what's risky and what's not.

  5. Multimodal Generative AI: AI is moving from just text to using text, speech, and images. This means it can give answers that are more relevant. For example, in customer service, AI could understand spoken words, read documents, and even read facial expressions to give better advice.

  6. AI Safety and Ethics: As AI becomes a bigger part of our lives, making sure it's safe and used right is important. Big tech companies are working together to make AI safer and more ethical. IBM and Meta, along with others, started the AI Safety Alliance to promote responsible AI.

Which of these current trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) do you believe is most crucial for the future of the industry?

  • Customization of Enterprise AI

  • Open Source AI Models

  • API-Driven AI and Microservices

  • AI as a National Priority
