Nvidia has just introduced Chat with RTX, an innovative demo app that transforms your PC into a powerhouse for personal AI chatbot capabilities. With the ability to process YouTube videos and personal documents, Chat with RTX offers tailored summaries and insights directly from your data. This cutting-edge tool operates exclusively on PCs equipped with RTX 30- or 40-series GPUs, necessitating a minimum of 8GB of VRAM.
Having explored Chat with RTX, its potential as a tool for data research is immediately evident, despite its current developmental state. This AI chatbot effortlessly navigates YouTube content, enabling users to search transcripts for specific references or to summarize entire videos—a feature particularly useful for sifting through video podcasts or for journalists like myself, managing vast collections of documents.
While the app showcases impressive functionality, like summarizing Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass strategy from trial documents, it's not without its flaws. Early testing revealed issues with transcript accuracy and the app’s capacity to handle large datasets without crashing.
Despite these hiccups, Chat with RTX’s ability to swiftly parse through PDFs and extract crucial information sets it apart from other systems, such as Microsoft's Copilot. The instantaneous response time significantly enhances productivity, bypassing the delays common to cloud-based chatbots.
However, Chat with RTX is very much an early developer demo, requiring the installation of a web server and Python instance on your PC. Leveraging Mistral or Llama 2 models, it utilizes Nvidia’s Tensor cores to expedite queries, presenting a glimpse into the potential of local AI chatbot functionality.
The installation process and the app's size are notable, taking approximately 30 minutes to set up on a high-end PC and occupying nearly 40GB. Once operational, Chat with RTX is accessed via a browser, with a command prompt running in the background to track processes and errors.
While Nvidia doesn’t market Chat with RTX as a finished product for all RTX owners, the demo underscores the exciting possibilities of local AI chatbot applications for personal data analysis without the need for premium subscriptions.
