Historic $25 Million AI Deepfake Heist Shocks Hong Kong

In a groundbreaking case, a multinational company's Hong Kong office was defrauded of HK$200 million (US$25.6 million) through an elaborate deepfake scam. The scam involved a digitally recreated AI video conference call where impostors, mimicking the company's chief financial officer and other employees, instructed a finance department employee to execute fund transfers.

This marks Hong Kong's first significant financial fraud involving deepfake technology to simulate a multi-participant video call, highlighting the growing sophistication of cybercriminals.

The Hong Kong Police are actively investigating the unprecedented scam, which exploited publicly available footage to replicate the appearances and voices of company officials convincingly.

The deception was revealed following a suspicious phishing attempt, leading to the discovery that an employee had been duped into transferring funds to five separate Hong Kong bank accounts based on the fake video calls instructions.

Senior superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching noted the unique nature of this fraud, where the scammers avoided direct interaction with the victim, adding to the scam's credibility.

The police have since advised on methods to verify identities in video calls, such as asking participants to perform specific movements or answer personalized questions.

To counteract such deepfake scams, one suggested security measure is providing employees with encrypted key pairs for identity verification in remote meetings. Additionally, the Hong Kong police aim to upgrade their alert system for the Faster Payment System (FPS) to include warnings for scam-related transactions, with plans to extend this protection to various transaction types by the second half of the year.

What do you think is the most effective measure to prevent deepfake scams in corporations?

  • Employee Training on Phishing and Deepfakes
