Despite its innovative strides, Google's Gemini is currently falling short of fully replacing the Google Assistant on Android, according to recent user feedback. Google acknowledges this gap and has promptly identified a list of "things to fix ASAP" to enhance Gemini's functionality.
In a detailed support document, Google outlines the features and services from Google Assistant that are presently absent in Gemini, including:
Media Service Providers: Lack of support for podcasts, news, radio stations, and third-party music providers.
Routines: Inability to initiate a Routine within Gemini. Shortcuts for starting Routines and Routines tied to alarms in the Clock app are not operational.
Reminders: Users are advised to revert to Google Assistant for setting reminders and tasks.
Interpreter Mode: Necessity to switch back to Google Assistant for interpreter services.
Jack Krawczyk, from Google, highlighted key areas needing immediate attention, such as integrating Assistant tasks related to calendar, reminders, and routines through extensions. Notably, an issue with the Android app's conversational overlay input has already been addressed.
The rollout of English support in regions like Latin America, Africa, Asia Pacific, and Canada, along with Japanese and Korean language availability, is set to begin soon. Plans for launching the Gemini app in the UK, Switzerland, and European Economic Area are also underway.
Among the top priorities for improvement are handling refusals, adding a coding interpreter, and adjusting preachy guardrails with impractical examples. On a positive note, Google highlights Gemini's strengths in writing style, creativity, response speed, and online connectivity, among others.
Furthermore, Google is promoting Gemini Advanced by offering it free for the first two months, essentially providing users with a glimpse into the paid tier's capabilities.
What should be Google's top priority in enhancing Gemini to match or surpass Google Assistant?
Expanding Media Service Compatibility
Enabling Routines and Reminders
Improving Interpreter Mode
Refining Conversational Input
