Accelerating Autonomy: Pony.ai & Toyota's Joint Venture

Pony.ai and Toyota have joined forces, marking a significant leap in the race toward mass-producing L4 Autonomous Vehicles. The collaboration, cemented through a joint venture agreement, signifies a pivotal step toward the widespread adoption of fully autonomous mobility services.

In an official ceremony held on August 4, 2023, executives from Pony.ai, Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (TMCI), and GAC Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (GTMC) came together to solidify this groundbreaking partnership. The primary goal is to expedite the development and deployment of driverless robotaxis on a large scale.

The joint venture, slated for establishment in 2023, carries an estimated investment surpassing RMB 1 billion (approximately USD 139.2 million). GTMC will supply Pony.ai with Toyota-branded electric vehicles, specially equipped with Toyota’s redundant systems tailored for L4 autonomous driving development. These vehicles will integrate Pony.ai's cutting-edge autonomous driving technology and operate within the PonyPilot+ robotaxi network platform, ensuring passengers access safe and seamless robotaxi services.

This collaboration leverages Pony.ai's expertise in autonomous driving technology and robotaxi operations, Toyota's renowned vehicle technologies, and GTMC's advanced production proficiency. The unified effort aims not only to expand robotaxi services but also to catalyze the full-scale commercialization of advanced autonomous mobility, propelling the entire industry into a new era.

This partnership builds upon the longstanding collaboration between Pony.ai and Toyota. Their journey began in August 2019 when they announced a joint initiative to advance autonomous vehicle development in China. Subsequently, in September 2019, the two entities collaborated on autonomous driving tests on public roads in China, employing Toyota's Lexus RX 450h model and Pony.ai’s autonomous driving systems. The culmination of their efforts came in April 2023 when the Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS (S-AM) vehicle, equipped with Pony.ai's sixth-generation autonomous driving software and hardware, commenced public road testing in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Presently, Pony.ai manages a fleet of around 200 Toyota and Lexus brand robotaxis among its autonomous vehicle assets. These vehicles operate across China’s Tier-1 cities, facilitating road tests and offering robotaxi services to the public in Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen.
